BOOK STUDY (World Geography)
Lord of the Flies
Students will pair their learning from Unit 1 and Unit 2 with William Golding's Lord of the Flies, which emphasizes the skills needed to survive unfamiliar territory while completely cut off from civilization. Students will expand their knowledge of the tools geographer's need to create maps of new areas, as well as the changes in weather and climate in different parts of the world. The novel will also touch on themes of civilization, savagery, power, and leadership, which will be major themes in the following units of world geography. Pre-AP Classes Students will be responsible for completing their assigned readings and Chapter Summary Analysis on their own. All Analysis documents must be attached to their ISN on the assigned pages before each deadline in order to be graded. Deadlines will be given for each analysis as we continue covering the book. On-Level Classes Students will read in class and complete a Chapter Summary Analysis. All Analysis documents must be attached to their ISN on the assigned pages. I Am Malala (Young Reader's Edition)
Malala Yousafzai is a world-renowned activist and champion for education in the world's oppressed nations. As a teenager, she became known for publicly protests for girls to attend school in her native Pakistan, under the control of the Taliban. At the age of 16, she was the target of an assassination attempt, and she had to be evacuated to Great Britain not only for her medical care, but for her safety as well. Students will compare and contrast cultural differences between Malala's experiences and their own, and will identify the fundamentals of government and economy and their application in different cultural regions. The students will also learn the basic tenets of the world's major religions as well as languages, customs, and traditions.
