Timelines: Sequencing Events
In World History, it is easy to get overwhelmed by dates, especially when they overlap each other. To help you grasp the importance of historical dates, we will be working extensively with timelines and sequencing events. Events should always be placed in chronological order, titled, and dated on your timeline. Eras, or significant time periods, should have a beginning time mark and ending time mark (ex. "1914- WWI Begins" and "1918- WWI Ends"). Both events and eras should have brief descriptions of what happened during that time.
Remember, neatness is ALWAYS a must.

Unit 11: Cold War-Present
Cold War
1945-1990 After WWII, the Soviet and U.S. superpowers attempted to extend their influence- based on their political, economic, and social differences- through global competition. This competition between Communist and Capitalist dominance led to crises and conflicts on every continent, emerging first in Europe, then spreading to Asia, Latin America, and Africa. The Soviet Union and the United States never engaged in open warfare, but relations between the two were "cold" and always on the edge of declaring war. The Cold War would dominate global politics for the next 45 years, until the collapse of Russian communism in the early 1990's. Korean War
June 25, 1950 - July 27, 1953 Korea had been a part of the Japanese empire, but Japan lost control of their imperial colonies after their surrender in WWII. The Korean peninsula was divided in half along the 38th parallel. The Russians occupied the area north of the line and the U.S. occupied the area to its south. On June 25, 1950, the North Korean People’s Army invaded the southern Republic of Korea, the first military action of the Cold War. American troops began fighting on South Korea’s behalf in an effort to contain Communism. After some early back-and-forth across the 38th parallel, the fighting stalled and casualties mounted with nothing to show for them. A ceasefire was negotiated in July 1953, ending the war, but a treaty officially ending hostilities was not signed until April 2018. Great Proletariat Cultural Revolution
1966-1976 In 1966, China’s Communist leader Mao Zedong launched what became known as the Cultural Revolution in order to reassert his authority over the Chinese government. Believing that current Communist leaders were taking the party, and China itself, in the wrong direction, Mao called on the nation’s youth to purge the “impure” elements of Chinese society and revive the revolutionary spirit that had led to victory in the civil war 20 decades earlier and the formation of the People’s Republic of China. The Cultural Revolution continued in various phases until Mao’s death in 1976, and its tormented and violent legacy would resonate in Chinese politics and society for decades to come. Arab-Israeli Conflict
1948-Present After the Holocaust in World War II, in which six million Jewish people were killed, the United Nations created Israel as a Jewish homeland. They were given a large part of Palestine, which they considered their traditional and biblical home. However, many Arab groups had already lived there for centuries and felt that being relocated to the smaller territories of the Gaza Strip and West Bank was unfair. They rejected Israeli statehood and the two sides went to war. Palestinian Arabs and Israelis fought major wars periodically since 1948, with very limited progress in improving relations, mostly due to foreign intervention from the United States. |
Yalta Conference
February 4-11, 1945 Before WWII ended, Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin met at Livadia Palace in the Soviet Union to discuss plans for the Post-War World. Differences between Communism and Capitalism became a major point of contention between the three superpowers. They agreed to divide Germany into four separate zones of occupation, controlled by the three allies and France. Stalin also promised to allow free elections in Russian-controlled territories, which he did not do. After placing Communist politicians into positions of power, creating a buffer zone between the Soviet Union and capitalist Europe, called the "Iron Curtain". Vietnam War
November 1, 1955 - April 30, 1975 The Vietnam War was a long, costly and divisive conflict that pitted the communist government of North Vietnam against South Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States. The conflict was intensified by the ongoing Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. More than 3 million people (including over 58,000 Americans) were killed in the Vietnam War, and more than half of the dead were Vietnamese civilians. Opposition to the war in the United States bitterly divided Americans, even after President Richard Nixon ordered the withdrawal of U.S. forces in 1973. Communist forces ended the war by seizing control of South Vietnam in 1975, and the country was unified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam the following year. Apartheid in South Africa
1948-1994 After the National Party gained power in South Africa in 1948, its all-white government immediately began enforcing existing policies of racial segregation under a system of legislation that it called apartheid. Under apartheid, nonwhite South Africans (a majority of the population) would be forced to live in separate areas from whites and use separate public facilities, and contact between the two groups would be limited. Despite strong and consistent opposition to apartheid within and outside of South Africa, its laws remained in effect for the better part of 50 years. In 1991, the government of President F.W. de Klerk began to repeal most of the legislation that provided the basis for apartheid. Global War on Terrorism
September 11, 2001-Present The Global War on Terrorism, also known as the War on Terror, is an international military campaign that was launched by the U.S. government in response to the 9/11 Attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, in which about 3,000 Americans were killed. Conflicts of the War on Terror are largely due to the rise of radical terrorist groups in the Middle East, human rights violations by governments, and the development and stockpiling of weapons of mass destruction. |
